AARP offers information and services to enhance the quality of life for the aging population.  The Driver Safety Program includes an 8-hour course geared toward the mature driver, which includes defensive driving and driving-capabilities awareness.

AAA publishes The Disabled Driver Mobility Guide which can be an aid to locating equipment and services for the physically disabled driver. It also provides services to local automobile clubs for workshops on aging drivers and training for the use of adaptive equipment.

The NCRTM exists to provide a variety of disability related training resources to those who serve persons with disabilities.  The NCRTM is funded by a grant from Rehabilitation Services Administration that is a principal component of the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS) in the U.S. Department of Education (ED).  NCRTM locates and distributes training materials in a wide variety of content areas for rehabilitation practitioners in state, federal and private agencies nationwide.

NHTSA is the federal government agency that regulates the manufacture of automotive adaptive equipment and modified vehicles for persons with disabilities.  This site provides information on adapting motor vehicles, transporting persons with special needs, research reports on safety and equipment, as well as rules and regulations for manufacturers and installers.

The SAE's Adaptive Devices Standards Committee develops recommended standards and practices for adaptive equipment. It has published a Recommended Practice on Manual Hand Controls (SAE J1903 July 1989) and is working to develop recommended standards for wheelchair lifts, occupant protection, terminology, power-assisted controls and vehicle structural modifications. Though written primarily for engineers, SAE publications are available to the public.

The VA provides grants and reimbursements for adaptive-equipment needed for service-connected disabilities. Under some circumstances, financial aid is also available for equipment needed for non-service connected disabilities. It also has driver training centers at locations throughout the VA Hospital network. For information, contact the prosthetic service of your nearest VA Central Office or VA Medical Center.
